Cinderella's Secret Slipper is a children's picture book written by Alinka Rutkowska and illustrated by Konrad Checinski. Cinderella and Prince Charming have a son, Junior, whose fourth birthday is approaching. They want to do something special for him and the prince suggests a royal gala celebration. He asks Cinderella to wear the glass slippers that she was wearing when they met. She's got them safely stowed away in a box in her closet, but when she opens the box, she only finds one slipper. Junior found them and is smashing a mosquito with the other glass slipper. Cinderella only has one slipper now, and she must find a way to get the broken one fixed. 5star-shiny-webAlinka Rutkowska's children's picture book, Cinderella's Secret Slipper, is a clever and entertaining extension of the classic fairy tale. It also has a bit of suspense as Cinderella needs to get that slipper fixed. Checinski's illustrations are marvelous! They're bold and brightly colored and fit the dialogue to a tee. This is a great first reader book or bedtime read-aloud for parents or care-givers. Rutkowska adds discussion questions at the end of the story as well as a version of the original fairy tale, which could be a perfect prelude or follow-up for a read-aloud session. I liked the mood of Cinderella's Secret Slipper and enjoyed seeing how Cinderella resolved her problem. While I'm familiar with this author's excellent Maya & Filippo series, this is the first of her fairy tale retelling series that I've read. Cinderella's Secret Slipper is quite impressive and it's highly recommended.

This charming sequel to the classic story of Cinderella has our heroine in a state of despair.  It seems her son accidentally broke one of her treasured glass slippers.  What's a princess to do?  Award winning author Alinka Rutkowska sets the table with a troubling situation, works through some possible resolutions, then has Cindy emerge from the turmoil with a couple of happy surprises.  For children of all ages who wonder what happens when  characters are said to live happily ever after, Ms Rutkowska gives us a glimpse, and does so with her usual cleverness and creative thinking.  The story is strikingly illustrated, beautifully written, and highly recommended by this writer.

A delightful twist on the beloved familiar fairy tale “Cinderella” This is a lighthearted read-aloud for elementary-age students. Comical and neat, with unusual twists and turns, this retold tale will immediately grab children’s attention and will make them wonder who can fix Cinderella’s problem. Children and parents will enjoy the silliness of the story and will chuckle at the whimsy of the amusing characters. Simple but fun illustrations pull the whole story together. The artwork is full of expression and wit and could tell the story on its own. The events will make readers smile and leave them in awe of Junior’s behavior. Everyone loves a happy ending, “and they all lived happily ever after” is the perfect ending to this modern fairy tale. The quiz at the end of the tale is a lovely finishing touch to this colorful book. Is there a moral in this retold tale? Does there have to be one? It’s a funny and relaxed read, which gives children the chance to explore their imagination by changing things around. Pure creativity and just plain fun for kids, which will teach them to read all kinds of stories. Is this a classic? Certainly not. Is it entertaining? Most definitely. Refreshing twist to an old tale! A pleasure to reread!
